The circumstances surrounding Brian Williams’ contested war story got murkier Friday after a pilot who gave credence to Williams’ version of events on CNN admitted his memories may be unreliable.
Rich Krell, who told “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter and CNN chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper Thursday the helicopter he piloted with Williams aboard “took small arms fire,” told Stelter Friday he is now “questioning my memories” and admits he “may have forgotten or left something out.”
The veracity of Krell’s account was contradicted Thursday when two pilots of Williams’ helicopter told The New York Times they “did not recall their convoy of helicopters coming under fire.” The pilot of the chopper that was forced down, Joe Summerlin, said Williams’ helicopter was “part of a different mission” that was a half-hour behind the chopper that was hit with a rocket propelled grenade.
