In The New York Times today, David Carr detailed what makes Rupert Murdoch and Michael Bloomberg tick: Money, power and ego. Never would’ve guessed that, right?
Murdoch and Bloomberg have been in the news a lot lately. The former because he might have an addiction to Twitter and can’t stop talking about how much he hates Mitt Romney. The latter because he’s a force at Bloomberg LP and that age old rumor about him buying The New York Times reappeared.
This, explained Carr, is exactly how they like it:
I don’t know Mr. Bloomberg or Mr. Murdoch personally, but I have covered them enough to know that they share a few hobbies. They both enjoy gossip, are inveterate news hounds and love to involve themselves in all aspects of the production of the news. They also like to wield broad influence on how that news unfolds.
In short, Murdoch and Bloomberg are like a lot of other obscenely rich dudes — they want to be the center of attention and will spend whatever is necessary to make that happen. Not the worst way to live your life. Not the best either.
