The Atlantic announced the appointment of Yoni Appelbaum to the position of politics editor in a press release Tuesday. In the same release, The Atlantic announced that Sophie Gilbert will be culture editor at the magazine.
Appelbaum, a historian who teaches at Harvard University, began at The Atlantic as a commenter who frequently replied to correspondent Ta-Nehisi Coates. Appelbaum’s comments interested The Atlantic, who solicited contributions from him.
Gilbert has been a senior editor at The Atlantic since May 2014, in charge of editing special reports and projects, according to the announcement. She has also contributed entertainment and culture articles.
The announcement also mentioned that David Graham and Spencer Kornhaber have been elevated to staff writer positions.
